Interventions with Challenging Behavior of Persons with Developmental Disabilities: A Review of Current Research Practices

Abstract: The published intervention research on the remediation of challenging behavior of persons with developmental disabilities was reviewed. A total of 179 studies over a recent 5-year period (1 988 through 1992) were reviewed for adherence to certain standards of practice, including the use of functional assessment, function-treatment matching, level of intervention intrusiveness, monitoring of collateral behaviors, follow-up, and generalization. Results are presented with regard to each standard of practice and t… Show more

“…Although a relatively large research base has been synthesized concerning the behavioral treatment of self-injury [Kahng et al, 2002] and specific reviews exist regarding treatment efficacy of a variety of treatment modalities [Lundervold and Bourland, 1988;Scotti et al, 1991;Schlosser and Goetze, 1992], including research practices addressing SIB and destructive behavior [Scotti et al, 1996], no quantitative review specific to naltrexone treatment for SIB exists. “…Quite the opposite, there is evidence that contrary to the application of punishment, which might decrease the use of restraints (Murphy, 1993), the application of non-punitive means might increase their use (Scotti, Ujcich, Weigle, Holland, & Kirk, 1996). Scotti et al's (1996) overview of the published literature in American journals, between 1988 and 1992, highlighted an increased use of restraints, either chemical or physical, to control behavior, which the aforementioned authors attribute to the zeitgeist of moving away from punishment as a component of treatment.…”

This evidence challenges the aforementioned assumption as well as Wolfensberger's (1972) statement that normative interventions lead inevitably to normative outcomes.…”
