“…In contrast to the above studies as well as the present results, Zhou et al did not find a significant influence of age on the T1ρ relaxation time [16]. They examined 80 patients with low back pain at 1.5 T. While there was a significant negative correlation between Pfirrmann grade and T1ρ relaxation time, age was not found to have a significant influence on T1ρ times.…”

“…This is justified, however, as the described preliminary test showed a very low level of interobserver variability. In addition, studies in the literature have shown excellent reproducibility results and high levels of interobserver reliability [6,16,30]. It would not have been possible to control for the minimal bias in light of the fact that none of the included individuals had ever suffered from low back pain, even though each individual was examined and interviewed by an orthopedic spine surgeon.…”

“…The discs were graded on the basis of the sagittal T2-weighted MR images, which provide MR-based semi-quantitative evaluations of the discs. The discs were assigned into one of the two groups based on the grading — non-degenerated (Pfirrmann grades 1, 2) or degenerated (Pfirrmann grades 3, 4) disc groups, in order to evaluate the significance of the differences between the normal/early and later stages of disc degeneration in terms of the T1ρ and T2 measurements (1415). …”

“…Degeneration changes in the IVD are characterized by a loss of hydrated proteoglycan-rich matrix of the nucleus pulposus (NP) and collagen, both of which affect the mechanics of the IVD[3]. In facet joint (FJ) osteoarthritis, patients demonstrate a loss of articular cartilage matrix, morphological reconstruction of the subchondral bone, and local tissue inflammation[2, 4, 5].…”

“…Decreased GAG content may lead to an increased mobile proton density in bulk water and an increased in T1ρ relaxation times. Therefore, T1ρ mapping could be a reliable method for quantitatively assessing PG content in IVDs and cartilage without the need for a contrast agent[3, 1921]. …”
