“…13 Salmonella is endemic in the Middle East and although no routine stool cultures were performed in the rest of our children who did not have gastro-intestinal symptoms, previous studies have not shown an increased rate of Salmonella carriage in patients with SCD. 16 Gall-stones are found frequently in patients with SCD and increase the risk of biliary carriage of Salmonella. Although our children were asymptomatic for gall-stones, because they did not undergo systematic imaging of the biliary tree, asymptomatic gall-stones might have been present, although they are uncommon before 10 years of age.…”
