Intestinal tuberculosis—the challenging mimicker—in a young Sudanese patient: A case report

Abstract: This article reported a case of intestinal tuberculosis (ITB)in a young patient. ITB could mimic many other diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease), abdominal lymphoma, and others which make it difficult to differentiate; hence, many ITB patients could get mis‐diagnosed and suffer wrong treatment consequences.

“…Because of their non-specific manifestations patients with colonic tuberculosis frequently encounter delayed diagnosis and treatment responsible of considerable morbidity and mortality. Even in highly endemic countries, the diagnosis of colonic tuberculosis may be missed in 50–70 % of patients, given the absence of specific clinical features and the negativity of biological tests [ 13 ]. Further study elaborated by Cheng et al investigated 85 patients with colonic tuberculosis concluded that 20 % of them were appropriately diagnosed as tuberculosis while 80 % were labelled as Crohn's disease, ileus, appendicitis or other etiology of an acute abdomen [ 14 ].…”
