The effect of prophylactic intraperitoneal aminated glucan on the survival rate and formation of adhesions and abscesses was investigated in rats with acute and subacute peritonitis, respectively induced by cecal perforation and ileal ligation. A significantly reduced mortality was found in both forms of peritonitis. Pretreatment by aminated glucan also significantly reduced the number of abscesses and peritoneal adhesions. An about threefold increase in peritoneal macrophages in aminated glucan-treated rats compared to controls was noted. In vitro studies, using ³²P-labelled Escherichia coli, demonstrated that peritoneal macrophages from aminated glucan-treated rats had an enhanced ability to engulf and degrade bacteria. Scanning electron microscopy showed that macrophages from aminated glucan-treated animals were highly spread with prominent ruffling and bacteria located intracellularly, as opposed to macrophages from controls which were rounded with bacteria on the cell surface.

Background: A variety of fluids can accumulate in the peritoneal and pelvic cavities including ascites, blood, pus, bile, urine, lymph, cerebral spinal fluid, and mucin. The appearance of some of these fluids by imaging may suggest a specific etiology, but a diagnostic aspiration must be performed in the majority of cases. This review aims to assess critically the value of peritoneal fluid analysis in the diagnosis.Methods: There was prospectively evaluated 80 patients presented with intraperitoneal fluid collection at Sohag University Hospital from July 2016 till July 2017. Physical, chemical, bacteriological and cytological properties of the aspirated peritoneal fluid was studied.Results: The study included 80 patients with intra-peritoneal collection of surgical importance (due to trauma, inflammation, malignancy). Diagnostic aspiration from intra-abdominal collection was routinely done in all cases giving the following results: 20 cases (25%) showed blood in the aspirate, 18 cases (22.5%) showed pus, 11 cases (13.75%) showed bile stained fluid, 9 cases (11.25%) showed gastric contents, 8 cases (10%) showed serosangenous aspirate, 7 cases (8.75%) showed clear fluid aspirate, 4 cases (5%) showed turbid fluid and 3 cases (3.75%) showed small intestinal contents.Conclusions: Diagnostic aspiration from intraperitoneal fluid collection is considered a simple available test that helps in diagnosis of major problematic cases.

MÉTODOS. Foram utilizados 64 animais, sendo 20 do Grupo A 1 (normais sem sutura da lesão), 22 do Grupo A 2 (normais com sutura da lesão) e 22 do Grupo B (esplenectomizados e com sutura da lesão). Os animais foram submetidos à laparotomia mediana e a indução da peritonite intra-operatória foi obtida através de lesão do cólon previamente distendido pela introdução de uma sonda naso-gástrica via retal e injeção de 2 ml de soro fisiológico. Foram realizados exames bacteriológicos de lavado abdominal obtido por swab esterelizado e exame microscópico de segmento suturado do cólon de amostras obtidas dos grupos A 2 e B com 48hs, 96hs e 12 dias de pós-operatório. Todos os animais foram submetidos a necropsia
