“…Many studies have explored the intraoperative and postoperative complications of MSFA procedures (Barone et al, ; Ghasemi et al, ; Kim, Freire, Yoon, & Kim, ; Lockhart, Ceccaldi, & Bertrand, ; Manor, Chaushu, Lorean, & Mijiritzky, ; Misch, Misch, Resnik, Ismail, & Appel, ; Schwartz‐Arad et al, ; L. Schwarz et al, ; Stacchi et al, ; Urban et al, ). The most common intraoperative complication is sinus membrane perforation (Barone et al, ; Pjetursson et al, ; Stacchi et al, ).…”

“…However, high complication rates and operative trauma can create challenges in terms of patient cooperation. Before sinus floor elevation, aspiration of mucus is performed to reduce the size of the cyst and decompress the pressure . Although the reported survival rate of implants is as high as 91.8% (61.7%‐100%), there is a potential risk of recurrence owing to connective tissue remnants .…”

“…Unfortunately, our study was not designed to analyze these interactions but most likely smoking influences not only subtypes of HLA-DR alleles, but also mHLA-DR expression. Our analyses show that smoking is not only related to postoperative complications such as cardiovascular [ 39 ], respiratory [ 40 ], and wound complications [ 41 ], but also related to preoperative immunological complications that might influence or induce postoperative complications. We hypothesize that regular smoking has long-term effects on immunity through directly affecting mHLA-DR. After surgery, mHLA-DR remains impaired resulting in a delayed recovery which increases the risk of postoperative complications [ 9 ].…”
