Intra‐community infanticide and forced copulation in spider monkeys: a multi‐site comparison between Cocha Cashu, Peru and Punta Laguna, Mexico

Abstract: We describe two cases of infanticide, two suspected infanticides, and a forced copulation by familiar resident males in two populations of wild spider monkeys (Ateles belzebuth chamek and A. geoffroyi yucatanensis). These are the first known infanticides and forced copulation in spider monkeys. Data were gathered from four neighboring communities of spider monkeys in Manu National Park at the Cocha Cashu Biological Station, Peru and two communities in the Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh Reserve at Punta Laguna, Mexico,… Show more

“…In the atelines, one important benefit appears to be in cooperative defense from extra group males that are potential competitors for receptive females. Invading males may also be infanticidal [Garber & Kowelewski, 2009;Gibson et al, 2008]. The cost of male-male tolerance is lower when males are kin, and for this reason Garber and Kowelewski [2009] predict that dispersal in Chiropotes and Cacajao is female biased.…”

“…Nearly all of the sightings of subgroups of two individuals in the risky boundary areas (83%) were of consorting male and female pairs. Spider monkeys routinely take part in consortships in which males and females may spend several days together while mating, separate from other individuals [Gibson et al, 2008]. This suggests that aside from subgroups that consist of a consorting pair, subgroup sizes of five individuals or above are most common in risky boundary areas.…”

“…Adult males within a spider monkey group collectively defend reproductive access to a group's females against extragroup males. Nonetheless, out of five confirmed or suspected cases of intragroup infanticide that have been witnessed in studies of wild spider monkeys, all have been directed towards unweaned male infants (Gibson et al 2008;Shimooka et al 2008;Vick 2008).…”
