Intra-oral myofascial therapy for chronic myogenous temporomandibular disorders: a randomized, controlled pilot study

Abstract: This study suggests that IMT alone or with the addition of self-care may be of some benefit in the management of chronic TMD over the short-medium term. A larger scale study over a longer term (1-2 years) may be of further value.

“…15,18,69-71 A pilot study that investigated a smaller sample of patients has previously been published. 72 In keeping with a model of multimodal treatment and an emphasis on self-care, it was decided to additionally trial a combined IMT, education, and self-care group (IMTESC), to observe whether this strategy enhances overall outcomes. The purposes of the trial were to investigate whether IMT and IMTESC are superior to no-treatment and to investigate whether IMTESC is superior to IMT, over the course of 1 year.…”

Assim, terapias não farmacológicas ou tratamentos físicos têm sido utilizados, geralmente com o objetivo de reduzir a dor e recuperar a função do sistema mastigatório (De Felício et al, 2010;Ahrari et al, 2014).…”
