“…Dr. Marius Nygaard Smith-Petersen was not the first to present a femoral neck fracture implant, but his three-flanged steal nail, which was introduced in 1930-1931 was considered an important improvement at that point (Smith-Petersen et al 1931, W.A.L. 1953.…”

“…Even before that time, in 1925, Smith-Petersen et al nailed a fracture of the femoral neck, marking the introduction of the first stainless steel nail implant. This implant, later available in vitallium as well, was designed with 3 flutes (star-shaped in cross section) to offer rotational stability to the bone-implant construct ( Figure 5) [52]. Improving on Smith-Petersen's example, in 1932 Johannson and Jerusalem stabilized a fracture of the femoral neck using the closed internal fixation method ( [18,19], after [5,36]), i.e., using an aiming device to insert the nail distant to the fracture site without opening up the joint (after [45]).…”

“…A classificação que inclui a fratura subcapital como um tipo, se deve a um erro de análise do exame radiológico, que faz com que o traço de fratura se altere dependendo da rotação dp membro inferior e da cabeça femoral, dando a falsa impressão da existência da mesma (16 Probably the mechanism described by Kocher (11) is what really happens in patients. The existence of a constant pattern of the fractures in the 126 cases reinforces the theory of Garden (7) , that the different types of fracture of femoral neck represent different stages of rotation of the same type of fracture.…”
