Intracellular and Extracellular Effects of S100B in the Cardiovascular Response to Disease

Abstract: S100B, a calcium-binding protein of the EF-hand type, exerts both intracellular and extracellular functions. S100B is induced in the myocardium of human subjects and an experimental rat model following myocardial infarction. Forced expression of S100B in neonatal rat myocyte cultures and high level expression of S100B in transgenic mice hearts inhibit cardiac hypertrophy and the associated phenotype but augments myocyte apoptosis following myocardial infarction. By contrast, knocking out S100B, augments hypert… Show more

“…Importantly, endothelial cell-released STAT3 has a key role in inflammation that underlies cardiovascular disease, and conversely, cardiomyocyte STAT3 is important for maintaining endothelial cell functions and the capillary integrity (Zouein et al, 2019). Furthermore, PTX3 resulted the most correlated protein in the inflammatory/fibrotic pathway with higher correlation to Foxp3, ATG7, and S100β proteins that have been linked to endothelial cell functions (Kreisel et al, 2004;Krupnick et al, 2005;Pober and Sessa, 2007;Tsoporis et al, 2010;Singh et al, 2015;Vion et al, 2017). Overall, these results provide the first stringent correlation between PTX3 cardiac expression and inflammatory/fibrotic pathways in an animal model of DMD.…”

“…Thus, effects of the activity of the S100B/RAGE axis are likely to be strongly context-dependent. As mentioned earlier, S100B is induced by catecholamines in cardiomyocytes surviving an infarct, thereby modulating left ventricular remodeling [14,335]. However, S100B can be released by injured cardiomyocytes and at relatively high doses it causes RAGE-dependent cardiomyocyte apoptosis [336] (Fig.…”
