Intracoronary β-Irradiation With a Rhenium-188–Filled Balloon Catheter

Abstract: Background-Restenosis requiring reintervention is the main limitation of coronary angioplasty. Intracoronary irradiation reduces neointimal proliferation. We studied the efficacy of a self-centering liquid rhenium-188 -filled balloon catheter for coronary ␤-brachytherapy. Methods and Results-After successful coronary angioplasty with or without stenting, 225 patients (71% de novo lesions)were randomly assigned to receive 22.5 Gy intravascular ␤-irradiation in 0.5-mm tissue depth (nϭ113) or to receive no additi… Show more

“…Alternatively, NIS may be used to transport other radioisotopes such as the ␤-emitter 188 Rhenium, which could potentially be more effective than 131 I because of higher radiation (44,45). How- ever, the only clinical experience with this radioisotope is limited to its use for endovascular brachytherapy or treatment of osseous metastasis (46,47).…”

“…The total segment included edge effects 5 mm proximal and distal to the stented segment according to trials with brachytherapy. 20 Furthermore, the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events, including death, MI, and need for reintervention (angioplasty or surgical revascularization), was analyzed. Group comparisons were done on a per-lesion basis.…”

“…The use of alternative NIS-transported radioisotopes with a higher energy than 131 I may improve the efficacy of NIS-mediated radionuclide targeted therapy (17,18). 188 Re is a type of short physical half-life radionuclide (0.71 days), which has been applied to treat various diseases, including prostate carcinoma, hepatoma carcinoma, breast carcinoma, bladder carcinoma, refractory arthritis and coronary beta-brachytherapy (19)(20)(21)(22) …”
