Intracranial Capillary Hemangioma Mimicking a Dissociative Disorder

Abstract: Capillary hemangiomas, hamartomatous proliferation of vascular endothelial cells, are rare in the central nervous system (CNS). Intracranial capillary hemangiomas presenting with reversible behavioral abnormalities and focal neurological deficits have rarely been reported. We report a case of CNS capillary hemangioma presenting with transient focal neurological deficits and behavioral abnormalities mimicking Ganser's syndrome. Patient underwent total excision of the vascular malformation, resulting in complete… Show more

“…[4][5][6][7] Other cases report intracranial capillary hemangioma found in the temporal region of an adult. 5,[7][8][9][10][11][12] There are only a few instances of intracranial capillary hemangiomas documented in older adults; very few of these are intra-axial capillary hemangiomas or capillary hemangiomas in the temporal lobe or show documented growth of the hemangioma over time 13 (Table 1). To our knowledge, the present case is only the ninth case of intra-axial intracerebral capillary hemangioma reported in the literature.…”

“…To our knowledge, the present case is only the ninth case of intra-axial intracerebral capillary hemangioma reported in the literature. 4,10,11,[14][15][16][17] Okamoto et al explored the de novo development of an intracranial hemangioma occurring in an older adult. 13 This lesion, identified in an 82-year-old woman, was positive for CD31 and CD34, had a Ki67 index of 7%, and was negative for GFAP and EMA.…”

“…In all such cases, as in our case, the preoperative diagnosis was cavernous hemangioma, metastatic brain tumor, or hemangioblastoma, which made it very difficult to differentiate them from other intraparenchymal lesions. [ 1 , 5 , 10 ]…”

“…All five lesions were hemorrhagic and preoperative diagnosis included metastatic brain tumor and cerebral amyloid angiopathy, but open biopsy revealed capillary hemangioma. John et al 26) reported a 59-year-old case that had a large cystic lesion with enhancing mural nodule in the right temporal lobe. Histological findings were consistent to capillary hemangioma (see Table 1).…”
