Intradural extramedullary spinal cord tumors: a retrospective study at tertiary referral hospital

Abstract: Introduction: Intradural extramedullary (IDEM) spinal cord tumours account two thirds of all intraspinal tumours. The objective of this study was to determine short- and long-term outcomes of surgical patients with IDEM spinal cord tumours, and to see clinical features that could be helpful in management of patients with these lesions (operated by single senior surgeononly). Methods: A retrospective review of 201 operative IDEM spinal cord tumours cases between 1993 and 2014 was performed. Outcomes were scored… Show more

“…Intradural extramedullary tumors, that are typically benign, account for two-thirds of primary spinal tumors. [ 4 ] Their location determines the clinical presentation, ease of surgical excision, and outcome. Plain radiograph can help to identify pedicle erosion, vertebral body erosion, foraminal widening, and scoliosis.…”

“…Intradural-extramedullary tumors accounted in primary spinal tumor and most of the intradural-extramedullary spinal tumors are benign with meningioma and schwannoma as the most common pathological finding for this type of tumor. 1,2 Conventionally, intradural-extramedullary spinal tumors were managed through excision with total laminectomy approach. This approach will facilitate proper visualization for the surgeon.…”
