Natural habitats play crucial roles in biodiversity conservation and shape the delivery of ecosystem services in farming landscapes. By providing diverse resources to foraging natural enemies, they can equally enhance biological pest control. In this study, we described the plant community and foliage-dwelling invertebrate predators within non-crop habitats of the Gobi Desert oases in southern Xinjiang, China. We assessed whether plant-related variables (i.e., species identity, flowering status) and herbivore abundance affect natural enemy identity and abundance. A total of 18 plant species belonging to 18 genera and 10 families were commonly encountered, with Apocynum pictum (Apocynaceae), Phragmites communis (Poaceae), Karelinia caspia (Asteraceae), and Tamarix ramosissima (Tamaricaceae) as the dominant species. Certain plant species (P. communis) primarily provide shelter, while others offer (floral, non-floral) food resources or alternative prey. Predatory ladybeetles and spiders were routinely associated with these plants and foraged extensively within adjacent field crops. Plant traits and herbivore abundance explained up to 44% (3%–44%) variation in natural enemy community and exhibited consistent, year-round effects. Among all plant species, A. pictum consistently had a significantly higher abundance of resident natural enemies, except for August 2019. Our study underlines how perennial flowering plants, such as A. pictum, are essential to sustain natural enemy communities and related ecosystem services in arid settings. This work not only informs sustainable pest management initiatives but also shows how non-crop habitats at the periphery of agricultural fields underpin ecological resilience under adverse climatic conditions.

Biological control has long been recognized for its economic and ecological bene ts as a pest management approach, but the use of non-native natural enemies has raised concerns about potential risks and unintended consequences. Indigenous predatory ladybeetles, such as Oenopia conglobata, play a crucial role in controlling many sap-sucking pests, including Agonoscena pistaciae, which is the most destructive pest of pistachio trees in Iran and other pistachio-growing regions worldwide. However, the abundance of Oenopia conglobata has recently decreased due to the presence of an adventive predatory ladybeetle, Menochilus sexmaculatus. To better understand the potential risks associated with this adventive species, we investigated the functional responses of female adults of M. sexmaculatus and O. conglobata against the third and fourth instar nymphs of A. pistaciae and Aphis gossypii. Our ndings revealed that both predators exhibited a type II functional response, with O. conglobata demonstrating a signi cantly higher attack rate against A. pistaciae nymphs than A. gossypii nymphs. In contrast, prey species did not have a signi cant effect on the attack rate of M. sexmaculatus. Notably, M. sexmaculatus displayed the highest predation rate and voracity against both prey species. These results provide valuable insights into the potential risks of M. sexmaculatus for indigenous predatory species like O. conglobata. The fact that M. sexmaculatus exhibits higher voracity for both prey species than O. conglobata does suggest that it may pose a threat to the native ladybeetle population, highlighting the need for further research and careful consideration when introducing non-native natural enemies for pest management. Pear cultivation accounts for a large proportion of worldwide orchards, but its sustainability is controversial because it relies on intensive use of pesticides. It is therefore crucial and timely to find alternative methods to chemical control in pear orchards. The psyllids Cacopsylla pyri and Cacopsylla pyricola are the most important pests of pear trees in Europe and North America, respectively, because they infest all commercial varieties, causing damage directly through sap consumption or indirectly through the spread of diseases. A set of natural enemies exists, ranging from generalist predators to specialist parasitoids. Trechnites insidiosus (Crawford) is undoubtedly the most abundant specialist parasitoid of psyllids. In our literature review, we highlight the potential of this encyrtid species as a biological control agent of psyllid pests by first reviewing its biology and ecology, and then considering its potential at regulating psyllids. We show that the parasitoid can express fairly high parasitism rates in orchards, and almost perfectly matches the phenology of its host and is present early in the host infestation season, which is an advantage for controlling immature stages of psyllids. We propose new research directions and innovative approaches that would improve the use of T. insidiosus in integrated pest management strategies in the future, regarding both augmentative and conservation biocontrol. We conclude that T. insidiosus has many advantages and should be included as part of integrated biological control strategies of pear psyllids, along with predators, in‐field habitat conservation, and the rational use of compatible chemicals. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.
