Intralipid treatment: Is it only the tip of an iceberg? A new suggestion: Bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS)

Abstract: On 1998 it was first showed that intravenous intralipid could prevent or improve resuscitation from cardiovascular collapse by severe bupivacaine overdose in rats. Since then published examples now include toxicities related to verapamil, diltiazem, amlodipine, quetiapine and sertraline, haldoperidol, lamotrigine, olanzapine, propranolol, atenolol, nevibolol, doxepin, dosulepin, imipramine, amitriptyline, glyosphate herbicide, flecainide, venlafaxine, moxidectin, and others. Intralipid treatment is a new treat… Show more

“…The experimental groups are the following: Sham: the hepatic hilar vessels were dissected. PH+I/R: animals subjected to PH (70%) under 60 min of ischaemia . PH+I/R+Glucose: same as group 2 but animals were intravenously infused for 4 h with 5 ml of a glucose solution (28%, energy content 4.6 MJ/1000 ml, Sigma Aldrich, Madrid, Spain) immediately after surgery . PH+I/R+Lipid: same as group 2 but animals were intravenously infused for 4 h with 5 ml of a lipid solution (10% Intralipid; 4.6 MJ/1000 ml, Fresenius Kabi, Barcelona, Spain) immediately after surgery . The emulsion comprised 52% linoleic acid, 22% oleic acid, 13% palmitic acid, 8% linolenic acid, 4% stearic acid, 1% other fatty acids, 8.184 g/l egg phospholipids and 15 g/l glycerine . …”

“…To investigate the relevance of adipose tissue in steatotic and non‐steatotic livers regeneration the following groups were studied: Sham+lipectomy of white adipose tissue (Sham+LPT): same as group 1, but mesenteric, perirenal, retroperitoneal and epididymal adipose tissue were resected and extracted . PH+I/R+lipectomy of white adipose tissue (PH+I/R+LPT): same as group 2, but mesenteric, perirenal, retroperitoneal and epididymal adipose tissue were resected and extracted before starting PH+I/R . PH+I/R+LPT+Glucose: same as group 6 but animals were intravenously infused for 4 h with 5 ml of a glucose solution (28%, energy content 4.6 MJ/1000 ml, Sigma Aldrich, Spain) immediately after surgery . PH+I/R+LPT+Lipid: same as group 6 but animals were intravenously infused for 4 h with 5 ml of a lipid solution (10% Intralipid; 4.6 MJ/1000 ml, Fresenius Kabi, Spain) immediately after surgery . …”
