Intramedullary brain stem cyst and trapped IV ventricle after infection with Listeria monocytogenes

Abstract: We present the rare case of a girl surviving intrauterine listeria brain stem meningoencephalitis, who subsequently developed hydrocephalus, a trapped IV ventricle and an intramedullary cyst. Such cases have been reported only infrequently, and in earlier cases modern imaging studies were not available. Magnetic resonance imaging has been helpful in our patient to delineate the lesions and plan further treatment.

“…Hydrocephalus was associated with spinal cord compression in two cases [5,7] and with intramedullary brain stem cyst trapping IV ventricle in one case [8]. In these reported cases, hydrocephalus occurred at different times ranging from a few weeks [5,8] to over 1 year [7] after the onset of the illness. In the present case, acute hydrocephalus occurred less than 10 days after admission.…”

“…Thus, identified cases of hydrocephalus complicating Listeria meningitis or encephalitis have been reported infrequently [5][6][7][8]. In these reported cases, hydrocephalus occurred at different times ranging from a few weeks [5,8] to over 1 year [7] after the onset of the illness.…”

“…4, 5 Madlinger & Krauss report the occurrence of hydrocephalus, trapped fourth ventricle and brainstem intramedullary cyst in a child following intrauterine listeria infection. 4 However, listeriosis has been infrequently implicated as a cause of hydrocephalus in adults. 2 Involvement of the cord due to spinal arachnoiditis is even less common.…”
