Intramedullary Clear Cell Ependymoma in the Cervical Spinal Cord: Case Report

Abstract: Histological diagnosis was crucial to our determining whether to perform postoperative adjuvant therapy in this patient. Neurosurgeons should be aware of the possibility of this histological entity among intramedullary spinal cord tumors.

“…Histological diagnosis is crucial to consideration of postoperative adjuvant therapy for intramedullary tumours of the spinal cord. In most patients with ependymoma of the spinal cord, the tumour can be totally removed, and postoperative adjuvant therapy is not required after complete resection (Akutsu et al, 2000). On the basis of the histological diagnosis in our patient, gross total removal was accomplished and postoperative radiation therapy was not administered.…”

The recurrence rate of CCE in all locations was about 60% during the follow-up period, [1][2][3][4][5][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][16][17][18][19][20][23][24][25][26][27][28] which is higher than other subtypes of ependymoma. 15) The clinical course of CCE was the worst among benign ependymomas, with a significantly higher expression of M...…”
