“…PD-10 desalting columns were purchased from GE Life Science (Piscataway, NJ). DO3A-(acetic acid-1,6-hexadiamine monoamide) (DO3A-AHM) and poly-(L-glutamic acid) N-hydroxylsuccinimide active ester (PGA-OSu) were synthesized from PGA (M w = 87 kDa, M n = 67 kDa) as previously described (17,23).…”

“…3 reveals that the predominant species in solution with the PYZ 2− ligand at these concentrations are in fact the ML 2 and ML complexes, with less than 1% of the intact ML 3 complex remaining. Due to the presence of inner-sphere water molecules on these hydrolyzed complexes, which have a well-known 33 quenching effect via non-radiative relaxation processes, the metal-centered luminescence is significantly reduced. Indeed, even in significantly more concentrated solutions, partial dissociation of the ML 3 complex will inevitably reduce the overall luminescence intensity compared to Eu(III) complexes with DPA 2− , which makes a direct comparison of the sensitisation efficiencies with these differing organic ligands problematic in aqueous solution.…”
