Intramural esophageal bronchogenic cysts: a review of the literature

Abstract: Bronchogenic cysts are rare congenital cystic lesions mostly located in the middle and superior mediastinum. Esophageal bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare. We review here 23 cases reported in English in the literature to date of intramural esophageal bronchogenic cyst and their features, including our patient. Although they are extremely rare, intramural esophageal bronchogenic cysts should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of benign esophageal lesions. With accurate diagnosis and treatment the … Show more

“…BC are generally mediastinal and intraparenchymal localized, but they may be seen anywhere with development of abnormal budding of tracheobronchial tree during the fetal development. One of the extremely rare localization of BC is between the mucosa and muscle layer of the esophagus which is called the intramural esophageal bronchogenic cyst (IEBC) (1,2). IEBC don't present symptoms, unless they reach to a large size.…”

“…Bronchogenic cysts result from abnormal budding of the primitive tracheobronchial tube and are the most common broncho-pulmonary foregut malformations [1]. The location of the cyst depends on the embryologic stage of abnormal budding [1].…”
