Intraocular Pressure Following Phacoemulsification and Endoscopic Cyclophotocoagulation for Advanced Glaucoma

Abstract: At ≥1 year postoperatively, the absolute success rate of treating advanced glaucoma by endocyclophotocoagulation and phacoemulsification was low. However, medication burden was reduced. Owing to the significant variation in the success rate based on the type of glaucoma, patients with advanced glaucoma should be carefully selected and counseled.

“…Endocyclophotocoagulation (ECP) can be combined with cataract extraction to theoretically reduce aqueous humor production. Only modest IOP reduction and reduction in medication use has been observed in several studies [20][21][22], but with few adverse events identified. Nevertheless, these IOP reductions were observed over up to 36 months postoperatively.…”

“…Morales et al. () retrospectively evaluated the results of phacoemulsification combined with ECP for advanced glaucoma and cataract at least 1 year after surgery. Absolute success (≤15 mmHg without medicatons) and qualified success (≤15 mmHg with medications) were reported 13.6% and 42% for PACG patients.…”

“…Kaplowitz K. et al described that ECP used for POAG decreases IOP by 8%-47%, to a nal average near 15 mmHg 12 . Clement et al combined phaco-ECP and observed IOP reductions up to 69%, the mean reduction of 23.9% 12 months after treatment 7,13 .…”
