Intraocular silicone lenses in silicone oil: an experimental study

Abstract: Optical interference has to be considered a possibility if it turns out that the droplets cannot be removed during silicone oil evacuation. Consequently silicone intraocular lenses without hydrophilic preparation of the surface should not be implanted in eyes undergoing combined anterior and posterior segment surgery with silicone oil tamponade or in eyes with high risk for vitreoretinal complications.

“…The AcrySof IOL exhibits a simple spectral structure in this region relative to the Sensar AR40e and I-Flex IOLs, which exhibit Raman bands at 1003, 1031, 1203, 1585, and 12 , v 18a , v 13 , v 8b , and v 8a modes of phenyl group. This indicates that the AcrySof is the only acrylate IOL that contains phenyl groups.…”

“…There are case studies and in vitro experiments in which adhesion of silicone oil to silicone IOLs has occurred. [10][11][12][13] Thus, identifying a silicone IOL before vitreoretinal surgery allows the surgeon to decide not to use silicone oil or to replace the silicone IOL with another material.…”

“…1994/ 1995 wurden die ersten faltbaren Intraocular-Linsen aus Silikon mittels Minimalschnitttechnik implantiert. Allerdings waren diese mit einer Silikonoltamponade nicht zu kombinieren [2]. Eine rasche Fibrose der hinteren Kapsel verhinderte nicht nur den Einblick, sondern erschwerte auch eine Reoperation.…”

“…1 Various studies report difficulty in removing oil droplets that adhere to silicone IOLs, and the IOLs have often been exchanged using a conventional 20-gauge vitrectomy system. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Any additional procedure in patients having several vitreoretinal surgeries and silicone oil injection should be minimally invasive. We demonstrate a method for removing an oil droplet from a silicone IOL using 25-gauge vitrectomy instrumentation.…”
