Abstract. The recent availability of dynamic, dense, and low-cost range imaging has gained widespread interest in health care. It opens up new opportunities and has an increasing impact on both research and commercial activities. This chapter presents a state-of-the-art survey on the integration of modern range imaging sensors into medical applications. The scope is to identify promising applications and methods, and to provide an overview of recent developments in this rapidly evolving domain. The survey covers a broad range of topics, including guidance in computer-assisted interventions, operation room monitoring and workflow analysis, touch-less interaction and on-patient visualization, as well as prevention and support in elderly care and rehabilitation. We put emphasis on dynamic and interactive tasks where real-time and dense 3-D imaging forms the key aspect. While considering different range imaging modalities that fulfill these requirements, we particularly investigate the impact of Time-of-Flight imaging in this domain. Eventually, we discuss practical demands and limitations, and open research issues and challenges that are of fundamental importance for the progression of the field.

Purpose Supporting the surgeon during surgery is one of the main goals of intelligent ORs. The OR-Pad project aims to optimize the information flow within the perioperative area. A shared information space should enable appropriate preparation and provision of relevant information at any time before, during, and after surgery. Methods Based on previous work on an interaction concept and system architecture for the sterile OR-Pad system, we designed a user interface for mobile and intraoperative (stationary) use, focusing on the most important functionalities like clear information provision to reduce information overload. The concepts were transferred into a high-fidelity prototype for demonstration purposes. The prototype was evaluated from different perspectives, including a usability study. Results The prototype’s central element is a timeline displaying all available case information chronologically, like radiological images, labor findings, or notes. This information space can be adapted for individual purposes (e.g., highlighting a tumor, filtering for own material). With the mobile and intraoperative mode of the system, relevant information can be added, preselected, viewed, and extended during the perioperative process. Overall, the evaluation showed good results and confirmed the vision of the information system. Conclusion The high-fidelity prototype of the information system OR-Pad focuses on supporting the surgeon via a timeline making all available case information accessible before, during, and after surgery. The information space can be personalized to enable targeted support. Further development is reasonable to optimize the approach and address missing or insufficient aspects, like the holding arm and sterility concept or new desired features.

Asepsis preservation is compulsory in operating rooms (ORs) for avoiding the spread of hospital-acquired diseases. It is enforced nowadays by drastic measures regulating the use of sterile devices by non-sterile staff and vice versa. Contactless computer vision-based interfaces may overcome such limitations. Our works relates to the development of an image processing chain aiming at giving surgeons remote control over OR equipment. In this paper, we introduce a simulation of a gesturebased remote control interface intended for ORs. The software processing chain and the choices made for each of its steps are described, and its performance is quantified. A virtual scene including a robotic lighting support is introduced. A graphical interface enables the coupling of both processing chain and virtual scene, enabling the user to control the virtual lighting support by performing various hand postures. Functionalities include 3-dimensional displacements, control of the lighting intensity and task-specific pre-programmed movements.
