Intraoperative body temperature control: esophageal thermometer versus infrared tympanic thermometer

Abstract: Objective:To verify the correlation between temperature measurements performed using an infrared tympanic thermometer and an esophageal thermometer during the intraoperative period. Method: A longitudinal study of repeated measures was performed including subjects aged 18 years or older undergoing elective oncologic surgery of the digestive system, with anesthesia duration of at least 1 hour. Temperature measurements were performed simultaneously by a calibrated esophageal thermometer and by a calibrated infra… Show more

“…Third, there might have been some thermal differences between the esophageal and tympanic thermometers. The infrared tympanic thermometer exhibited reliable results but reflected lower temperatures than the esophageal thermometer [19]. Lastly, a greater number of female than male patients were included in the geriatric group in the study; however, the effect of gender on the body temperature of geriatric patients was not evaluated.…”

“…The use of devices and equipment in Liver Transplant are extremely important to promote agility and safety during the operation (16)(17)20) . There are recommendations that, in major surgeries, devices should be installed, as well as maintaining a temperature above 36 °C to promote hemodynamic stability (27) .…”

“…Dessa maneira, a aferição da tc por um termômetro timpânico tem sido bastante recomendada por ser um método não invasivo e que reflete valores mais próximos da temperatura central, principalmente em pacientes críticos (43). Além disso, esses termômetros não requerem a instalação por um médico, permitindo a independência da equipe de enfermagem em relação à mensuração da temperatura (41).…”
