Intraoperative magnetic resonance spectroscopy for identification of residual tumor during low-grade glioma surgery

Abstract: M axiMal safe resection is currently the most effective form of therapy for hemispheric LGGs and patients benefit from the extent of resection. 1,7,16,20 Intraoperative MRI has been used with success in LGG surgery, and the technique has been shown to both increase the extent of resection 2,[10][11][12]21,22,25 and significantly decrease recurrence and death rate in patients with LGGs. 2During LGG surgery, ioMRI can detect residual tumor tissue that cannot be identified by visual inspection or intraoperative u… Show more

“…High resolution of linear array intraoperative ultrasound (lioUS) usually allowed for a discrimination from tumor tissue. iMRI showed no surgery-induced artifacts that affected decisionmaking in tumor resection LGG report higher resection rates as previously published studies without the use of iMRI [7,11,16].…”

“…Intraoperative MRI spectroscopy and perfusion-weighted iMRI are promising techniques to detect tumor invasion beyond Gd-DTPA enhancement, according to the first clinical studies. 15,18 Our study shows a significant difference of tumor detection at the border zone of GBMs. Especially since detection of the infiltration zone is significantly superior in 5-ALA than in iMRI, we can expect a synergistic effect beneficial to the maximizing of EOR for application in the iMRI environment.…”
