Intraperitoneal Rupture of the Bladder after Urinary Catheterization

Abstract: Intraperitoneal rupture of the bladder is a rare cause of peritonitis. Intraperitoneal rupture of the bladder was diagnosed during an emergency laparotomy for suspected mesenteric ischemia. The patient had undergone iterative urinary catheterization after a vascular bypass. The perforation was excised and sutured and the patient was catheterized for urinary rest for 15 days. Urinary catheterization is a possible cause of intraperitoneal rupture of the bladder.

“…Not only may bladder damage occur during labor due to the lack of catheterization but also due to inadequate catheterization. Few cases of rupture after urinary catheterization without other predisposing factors have been described in the literature [28]. Four of these happened during labor vesical catheterization.…”

“…Although there are those who support emergency laparotomy in the treatment of the bladder perforation, there are also authors who support that the conservative treatment must be applied primarily. 5,15 While especially retroperitoneal perforations are mostly treated conservatively, a surgical operation is mostly needed in intraperitoneal perforations. 1,6 Moreover, there are those who prefer the conservative approach in the intraperitoneal perforation.…”
