Intraspecific diet shifts of the sesarmid crab, Sesarma dehaani, in three wetlands in the Han River estuary, South Korea

Abstract: Background: Han River estuary is a national wetland reserve near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between South Korea and North Korea. This trans-boundary estuary area has been well preserved and shows distinctive plant communities along the salinity gradient. To elucidate energy flows and nutrient cycling in this area, we studied trophic relations between the dominant sesarmid crab, Sesarma dehaani, and food sources in three wetlands with different environments along the estuarine gradients. Results: Stable isoto… Show more

“…The Janghang wetland stretches 7.6 km to Beopgot-dong, Ilsan Seo-gu, on the west and to Sinpyeong-dong, Deokyang-gu, on the east with a maximum width of 0.6 km and an area of 7.5 km 2 (land 2.7 km 2 and mudflats 4.8 km 2 ). This wetland is rich in biodiversity and is composed of different types of habitats, including a variety of forest wetlands mainly consisting of a Salix subfragilis community, wet meadows with herbaceous plants, mudflats, and farmlands (Han et al 2010(Han et al , 2012Yang et al 2019). In recognition of this, the Janghang wetland was designated as a protected wetland area (Ministry of Environment Notice No.…”

“…The feeding traits of pike-like crabs in two contiguous estuaries in the Australian region vary according to the season and location (Campbell et al 2021). Trophic relationships between the dominant crab Chiromantes dehaani and food sources in three wetlands with different environments in the salinity gradient of the Han River estuary on the border between South Korea and North Korea, as in uenced by crab body size and habitats (Yang et al 2019). Therefore, there is a close correlation between crab feeding and habitat, and the conservation of crab biodiversity requires the protection of crab habitats from destruction.…”
