Intrauterine photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging probe

Abstract: Intrauterine photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging are probe-based imaging modalities with translational potential for use in detecting endometrial diseases. This deep-tissue imaging probe design allows for the retrofitting of commercially available endometrial sampling curettes. The imaging probe presented here has a 2.92-mm diameter and approximate length of 26 cm, which allows for entry into the human endometrial cavity, making it possible to use photoacoustic imaging and high-resolution ultrasound to charac… Show more

“…Various research groups have implemented integrated PAT and US probes for clinical applications ( Levi et al, 2014 ; Dai et al, 2015 ; Kim et al, 2016 ; Miranda et al, 2018 ; Kothapalli et al, 2019 ; Zhang and Wang, 2020 ; Pang et al, 2022 ). A programmable US system can utilize various US transducers ( Figure 1 ) to generate PAT/US images ( Kim et al, 2016 ).…”

“…C, Example of a speckle pattern captured with the setup (128 × 16 pixel which enable the sampling of the speckle pattern at a field of view of 45 μm × 240 μm). The width is restricted by the fiber bundle diameter (240 μm), whereas the height (45 μm) is defined by the available pixel amount 16 For this work photoacoustic measurements in transmission mode and reflection mode, using the phantoms and the ex vivo sample, are carried out. For the phantom measurement, 15 single measurements per phantom are carried out and analyzed in order to ensure statistical relevance.…”

“…Hence, to achieve this goal, photoacoustic endoscopy (PAE) has been developed over these years [ 5 ]. PAE has been employed as a valuable imaging modality in various applications, such as intravascular imaging [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ], genitourinary imaging [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ], esophageal [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], and gastrointestinal imaging [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ].…”
