Intravitreal Ranibizumab in the Treatment of Cystoid Macular Edema Associated With Retinitis Pigmentosa

Abstract: This investigation indicated that IVR may provide a new therapeutic approach for the treatment of CME secondary to RP. No adverse event was found to be associated with the treatment. Continued experience with IVR in this population will help establish its longer-term efficacy.

“…Adverse effects of intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs in eyes with RP have not been reported, whether this therapy was to treat CNV [2, 3] or cystoid macular edema [10, 11]. In our patient, mottled fluorescence with a mixture of hypo- and hyperpigmentation appeared temporal to the macula after disappearance of hemorrhage.…”

“…In case report of Mustafa et al, a single unilateral intravitreal injection of aflibercept was given to a patient with RP-associated CMO. Improvement in both visual acuity and macular thickness was seen at 1 month post-injection as well as maintenance of this improvement documented at 6 months [19].…”

“…Numerous reports have discussed medical and surgical treatments. Some medical treatments, such as oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitor acetazolamide,1113 intravitreous triamcinolone,14 and antivascular endothelial growth factor agents,15 have been reported; however, most seem to only temporarily affect the CME. However, some studies have reported successful results with vitrectomy combined with ILM removal in some RP cases with CME 6,16.…”
