Intravoxel incoherent motion MRI of the healthy pancreas: Monoexponential and biexponential apparent diffusion parameters of the normal head, body and tail

Abstract: Multi-b-value DWI derived quantitative parameters including ADC400 , ADC600 , ADC800 , ADC1000 , ADCtotal , and f differed significantly among the pancreatic head, body and tail, with the lowest values obtained in the tail.

“…In ours and some previous studies, the perfusion component of IVIM model was expressed as the sum of the true diffusion and the flow‐related diffusion, i.e., f ·exp {‐b·( D fast + D slow )}. However, some other researchers simplified the perfusion component as f ·exp (‐b· D fast ), assuming a negligible influence of D slow on perfusion component. Given a much greater D fast value than D slow value in biologic tissue, omitting D slow from perfusion component of IVIM model would not lead to a meaningful difference in IVIM fitting results.…”

“…The multiple-b-values DWI derived parameters were calculated for all slices voxel-by-voxel with the following three approaches, which have been presented in our previously study in details [27]:Direct calculation of the ADC b using only two b-values (zero and non-zero): The ADC total calculation by monoexponential fitting to the equation using all b-values: Biexponential fitting on IVIM model gave ADC fast , ADC slow , f according to the following equation: …”

“…Since the introduction of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) in 1986 by Le Bihan, many efforts have been made to establish reference values of the perfusion fraction (PF) of healthy and pathologic tissues in different organs . However, PFs appeared to be moderately or poorly reproducible in some organs and significantly different when measured on different scanners …”
