Intriguing properties of multiplicity distributions

Abstract: Multiplicity distributions exhibit, after closer inspection, peculiarly enhanced void probability and oscillatory behavior of the modified combinants. We discuss the possible sources of these oscillations and their impact on our understanding of the multiparticle production mechanism. Theoretical understanding of both phenomena within the class of compound distributions is presented.

“…Oscillations were previously observed in the modified combinants derived from P (N ) values measured in pp and pp experiments, 1,4 whereas the C j values derived from the popular Negative Binomial Distribution (NBD) are monotonically decreasing with increasing j. a On the other hand, the Binomial Distribution (BD) gives strongly oscillating C j (with period two, not observed in the above data). To fit these data, one needs the BD to be compounded with another distribution that can effectively control the period and amplitude of the resulting oscillations (in Ref 4 it was compounded with an NBD).…”

“…Both features were only rarely used as a source of information. We demonstrate that the modified combinants can be extracted experimentally from the measured ( ) by means of a recurrence relation involving all ( < ), and that new information is hidden in their specific distinct oscillatory behavior, which, in most cases, is not observed in the obtained from the ( ) commonly used to fit experimental results [4][5][6][7]. We discuss the possible sources c ○ M. RYBCZYŃSKI, G. WILK, Z. W LODARCZYK, 2019 of such behavior and the connection of the with the enhancement of void probabilities, and their impact on our understanding of the multiparticle production mechanism, with emphasis on understanding both phenomena within the class of compound distributions.…”
