Intrinsic Thalamic Network in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy With Hippocampal Sclerosis According to Surgical Outcomes

Abstract: Background: The aim of this study was to identify the differences of intrinsic amygdala, hippocampal, or thalamic networks according to surgical outcomes in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients with hippocampal sclerosis (HS).Methods: We enrolled 69 pathologically confirmed TLE patients with HS. All patients had pre-operative three-dimensional T1-weighted MRI using a 3.0 T scanner. We obtained the structural volumes of the amygdala nuclei, hippocampal subfields, and thalamic nuclei. Then, we investigated the … Show more

“… 28 Some studies have assessed the association between surgical outcomes and MRI markers in TLE with HS. 29 30 31 One of the purposes of our study was to determine the potential clinical significance of MB atrophy in predicting surgical outcomes. Surgical outcomes following anterior temporal lobectomy were good in 58% of patients in the present study, which was similar to previous reports.…”

“…Calculation of intrinsic thalamic network using graph theory and correlation analysis. We previously described the detailed procedure to compute the intrinsic thalamic network using graph theoretical analysis in the BRAPH version 1.0 program [15][16][17]37 . Graph theory was used to analyze the network's nodes and edges.…”

“…We specifically focused on the thalamus in this study because it plays a pivotal role in seizure development, propagation, and termination in patients with focal epilepsy (Chaitanya et al, 2020;Cho et al, 2021;Lee et al, 2020;Park et al, 2019). The thalamus is a relay center for brain signaling, and the connections between different thalamic nuclei and the neocortex have been well demonstrated (Behrens et al, 2003).…”
