Introduced Pheidole of the world: taxonomy, biology and distribution

Abstract: The objective of this study is to provide a detailed taxonomic resource for identifying and studying ants in the genus Pheidole that have established beyond their native ranges. There is an increasing need for systematists to study taxa of specific concern to 21st century environmental, food security and public health challenges. Systematics has an important role to play in both the theoretical and applied disciplines of invasion biology. Few invaders impact terrestrial ecosystems more than ants. Among the wor… Show more

“…Each species name is followed by the taxon's currently known Ohio distribution, habitat, known area of origin and brief natural history notes. Precise distributional records of these species for North America and elsewhere can be found in Coovert (2005), Bolton et al (2007), Klotz et al (2008), Wetterer (2008, 2010), Ellison et al (2012, Guénard et al (2012), and Sarnat et al (2015). “…This species can be easily confused with members of the Pheidole punctatissima clade (P. anastasii Emery, 1896; P. punctatissima Mayr, 1870) as well as with members of the Pheidole flavens complex Sarnat et al 2015). In the southeastern United States, where outdoor colonies of this species can be found, it has often been misidentified as Pheidole floridana Emery, 1895.…”

“…It would be interesting to determine whether or not P. megacephala can tolerate P. navigans. Pheidole navigans, a big-headed ant native to the Neotropics, is known as an exotic in the southeastern US (formerly misidentified as P. moerens; see Sarnat et al 2015). If P. navigans battles with P. megacephala, but not with L. humile, the presence of P. navigans could affect the competitive balance between P. megacephala and L. humile.…”
