Introducing POSVAR: A dataset on refugee-related violence

Abstract: While scholars have for some time debated the role of refugee flows in the international spread of conflict, most evidence has been indirect due to the scarcity of systematic data on refugee-related violence. The Political and Societal Violence By And Against Refugees (POSVAR) dataset addresses this lacuna by providing cross-national, time-series data on refugees’ involvement in acts of physical violence in their host state, either as the victims or the perpetrators of violence, individually or collectively, i… Show more

“…Hence, additional coding efforts to distinguish between refugees as the source or target of violence are necessary. Savun & Gineste (2019), Gineste & Savun (2019), and Polo & Wucherpfennig (2017) have begun to pursue this promising avenue of research; in addition, Fisk (2014) provides spatially disaggregated conflict and refugee data in 26 African countries for 2000–10, while Shaver & Zhou (2017) have compiled geo-coded data on UNHCR refugee sites for 1989–2008.…”

“…To test the validity of our hypotheses, we build a global cross-national dataset for the period 1996 to 2015. For our dependent variable, we draw upon the government repression and violence against refugees index [GVI] variable from the Political and Societal Violence by and against Refugees (POSVAR) dataset (Gineste and Savun 2019).…”

“…A final contribution of this special issue is to introduce a new dataset. Gineste & Savun (2019) present a new cross-sectional time-series dataset on refugee-related violence that provides systematic information on refugees’ direct involvement in violence in their host states, either as the perpetrators or as the victims of violence, between 1996 and 2015. The POSVAR (Political and Societal Violence By and Against Refugees) dataset provides an opportunity for scholars to empirically evaluate existing and new hypotheses regarding the causes and dynamics of refugee-related violence that was not possible previously due to scarcity of systematic data.…”
