Introducing Scientific Literature to Honors General Chemistry Students: Teaching Information Literacy and the Nature of Research to First-Year Chemistry Students

Abstract: This paper describes the methodology and implementation of a case study introducing the scientific literature and creative experiment design to honors general chemistry laboratory students. The purpose of this study is to determine whether first-year chemistry students can develop information literacy skills while they engage with the primary chemical literature. Subject-specific library instruction was paired with student assignments by using the scientific literature as a resource for ideas on developing gen… Show more

“…While small-scale studies offer details into how students use information for specific assignments, and large-scale studies illustrate high-level patterns regarding library resources, services and student success metrics, studies targeting course-level grades can provide critical clues about how IL relates to student performance within disciplinary contexts. Some studies examine this relationship between IL and course-level grades (Ferrer-Vinent et al, 2015;Coulter et al, 2007;Shao & Purpur, 2016), yet many portray IL as resourceoriented or generic skills that are not grounded in the disciplinary context being examined.…”

“…Information literacy is particularly important in the sciences, including biology (Brown & Krumholz, 2002;Freeman and Lynd-Balta, 2010;Ferrer-Vinent et al 2015;Thompson & Blankinship, 2015;Jacobs et al 2016). Robinson and McDonald (2014) relate information literacy to higher level skills, such as critical and creative thinking.…”

“…Para o ensino de Química, acredita-se que a atividade experimental seja fundamental na visualização dos assuntos tratados em sala de aula e se destaca como principal atividade prática aplicada tanto no ensino básico como no ensino superior (SANTOS;SCHNETZLER, 1996). Nesse contexto, a atividade prática experimental tem sua importância elevada devido, principalmente, aos aspectos investigativo e criativo proporcionados aos estudantes (LÔBO, 2012;FERRER-VINENT et al, 2015).…”
