Introducing the Tishchenko reaction into sustainable polymer chemistry

Abstract: The combination of the Williamson and Tishchenko reactions produced a series of new α,ω-diene functionalized carboxylic ester, by which serials of polyesters have been prepared successfully.

“…Furthermore, the enhancement of the polymer polarity will form a stronger dipole‐dipole interaction, which also leads to an increase in T g of a polymer. The phenomenon was also observed in similar polymers [9,28] . A similar tendency was also observed in terms of the effect of the length of the aliphatic segments in aliphatic α,ω‐diene chains on the T g , as the T g s of P2a and P2b are 20 °C and 12 °C, respectively (Figure 3f).…”

“…The hydrogenation post‐polymerization modification of P2b also increase the thermostability of the polycarbonate, as evidenced by an increase in the T 5% from 290 °C to 341 °C, and the T 50% increased from 378 °C to 385 °C. It is rational to be explained by the higher thermostability of saturated aliphatic chain than that of the unsaturated aliphatic chain in the polymers (Figure 3e) [28] …”

“…Finally, a hydrogen atom on the carbon atom, which was originally the carbonyl carbon, transfers to a newly coordinated aldehyde, resulting in the generation of an ester and an aluminum alkoxide. Although the Tishchenko reaction has been employed in polymer chemistry as a bond-forming reaction [30][31][32][33] and a termination reaction, 37 and for monomer synthesis, 38 there are no reports on the tandem polymerization consisting of the Tishchenko reaction and other organic reactions as far as we know.…”
