Internationally, an age-friendly built environment, including safe, affordable, and convenient transportation, has been identified as crucial in enhancing the quality of life for increasingly large numbers of elderly people. This study presents data on the urban travel and mobility patterns of older adults in Shiraz, Iran -a country where the population is ageing faster than the average of western societies. The relationship between car use and sociodemographic and built environment variables is investigated through Ordinary Least Squares and Geographically Weighted Regression models. These models show that the main determinants of car use among older adults are: employment status; household size; car ownership rate; trip purpose; property prices; and mixed land-uses. Also, the study reveals that car dependency is significant and more pronounced among wealthier individuals, who tend to be clustered in the northern section of the city. The population density and road network design characteristics do not affect car use among older adults, while a mix of land-uses tends to attenuate car dependency. Gender gaps in car use are much wider than in the West, and some level of spatial mismatch between travel needs and car access is observed in the southern section of the city. Clearly, Iranian cities must move away from the current car-centric development model.

The contradictory and inefficient nature of urban public policy in Iranian historic cities has been subject to long debates in recent years, and has even led to disorganisation in the formation of dilapidated abandoned buildings (DABs). Under the current policies, three government agencies oversee the urban management in historic cities. The projects and processes that have yet to be implemented by these agencies are crucial for solving the problems associated with DABs. This research aims to investigate the current public policies of the essential key players and stakeholders in order to ameliorate the problem of DABs, which in the literature has been proven to be associated with socio-spatial disadvantage. A qualitative semi-structured enquiry was conducted, and urban public policies were evaluated on the basis of 19 in-depth interviews regarding the three historic cities of Yazd, Kashan and Isfahan. The results were analysed using cutting and sorting techniques, and thematic and critical narrative analysis. Several inadequacies in the current urban public policy were specified. This research could help decision-makers to create efficient management plans with respect to the reduction of DABs, an approach that can be considered efficient for the regeneration of life in historic cities.

Nowadays in countries with long history and civilization most of factors that distinguish the historical city is available in the form of physical identity. It always absorbs significant attention of urban planners, residents and visitors and quality of life. It has played an important role in quality of next generation. The objective of this research is to investigate and analysis the components of the city's physical identity in Iranian cities such as Isfahan, Shiraz and Yazd and capabilities of that historical urban identity in field of natural artifact and human factors. Research method is descriptive-analytical with qualitative and quantities approach to recognize and prioritize the factor using AHP analytical hierarchical process that provides a comprehensive and rational framework for structuring a decision problem, for representing and quantifying the Iranian cities , for relating those elements to physical identities, and for evaluating them. This applied study has a descriptive-analytical basis with a population of 30 experts in urban planning and citizens and local people completed 120 questionnaires. Cultural matters and academic staff used as participants. First, the quality physical identity was determined based on the 3 main criteria and 15 sub-criteria in a hierarchical tree. Then experts were asked to score the major and minor criteria and specify their priorities based on paired comparisons. Applying the Expert Choice, which implements the AHP, the weights of each criterion and sub-criterion were estimated respectively. Finally, according to the Iranian urban identity were described. The results obtained showed that the artifact factor, weighting 0.614, got the first priority and it was followed by natural (0.268), and human (0.117) criteria, which got the second to the third rank.
