“…In 2008 in Québec, the divorce index was close to 50% (Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), 2011), a figure that is comparable to that of other Western countries, amongst them the United States (National Center for Health Statistics, 2017). And while the divorce rate has become more stable, the structure of post-separation families is becoming increasingly diversified (Saint-Jacques, Robitaille, St-Amand, & Levesque, 2016). At the socio-legal level, one of the major issues concerns the continuity of the child’s relationship with both parents.…”

“…In general, fathers are increasingly involved with their children after separation, be it in North America or Europe (Amato, Meyers, & Emery, 2009; Westphal, Poortman, & Van der Lippe, 2014). And even though maternal custody remains the most common custodial arrangement, an increase in the number of families in joint physical custody has been observed in Québec and elsewhere in the world (Pelletier, 2016; Saint-Jacques et al, 2016).…”

“…For some children, their parents’ separation is so difficult that custody exchanges and even contact with a parent have to be supervised. In a study conducted in Québec (Canada) with a representative sample of parents who were separated on average for a period of 23.3 ( N = 1,703), 2.5% of the respondents indicated having used supervised access services in the context of their parental separation (Saint-Jacques et al, 2018). While the data needed to evaluate how many families have received these services is not available, we know that they are relatively numerous because of the large number of supervised access services in the United States (Crook & Oehme, 2007), Canada (Kelly, 2011; Saini, Van Wert, & Gofman, 2012; Saint-Jacques, Fortin, St-Amand, Drapeau, & Gagné, 2016), and Australia (Sheehan et al, 2007).…”
