“…Moreover, the increasing thickness of the deposits over time leads to a reduction in the cross-sectional area with a consequential rise of the pressure drop. In 1972, Taborek et al indicated fouling as the major unresolved problem in heat transfer, but its relevance is still very high because of its impact in terms of energy losses, fuel consumption and emissions [ 29 , 30 ]. A similar influence of fouling on thermal and hydraulic resistances also takes place in steam cracking reactors, where the formation of coke on the inner wall of the tubular reactors represents the major reason of process inefficiency [ 31 ].…”

“…Fouling in crude oil preheat exchangers presents refineries with major operational, environmental, and safety challenges, concerning issues such as reduced heat transfer, rising pressure drop, excess CO 2 emissions, waste disposal, hazards related to approaching furnace limits, crane operation, and personnel health and safety. These could result in substantial economic penalties amounting to about $12.5MM per annum for a 100 000 bbl/day refinery . Such fouling concerns are as old as heat exchangers themselves and have been scrutinized from molecular to large industrial scales using either empirical studies on deposit generating rigs (hot wires, microbomb reactors, , batch stirred cells, , and flow loops , ) or field studies on refinery preheat exchangers. The studies were carried out as follows: the analysis of process data and characterization of foulant samples.…”

“…4 In other areas, such as refining applications, fouling can be caused by more than one mechanism at the same time. 2 Its consequences on the operation of chemical processes are of major concern.…”

“…6 This is most evident in the preheat train (PHT) of the crude distillation unit (CDU), which processes all the crude oil that comes into the refinery under extreme conditions, such as high temperature, varying range of composition, and high amounts of contaminants. 2 In this case, the extra thermal resistance in the heat exchangers reduces the coil inlet temperature (CIT) to the furnace, to compensate because more fuel is burned, increasing the amount of carbon emissions and the operational cost. If no mitigating action is performed in the HEN, the operational cost of refining operations can increase by several million dollars per year.…”
