Introduction

Abstract: The introduction geographically and historically situates the ethnography. It introduces the concept of Black corporeal undercommons, defines rumba, traces how it has been understood differently over time as a secular form of national heritage, and explains why the sacred is key to understanding the lived experience of its practitioners. It introduces the rumba ensemble Yoruba Andabo, which grounds the study, and finally outlines the chapters.
