Introduction

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the Turkish language in general, as well as introducing the reader to the theoretical framework the book is couched in. In introducing the Turkish language, its general characteristics are overviewed, along with the question of linguistic affinity and historical development, as well as influences from other languages. Orthography is also covered. The theoretical approach employed throughout the book uses tools from both Autosegmental Phonology (including Feature Geometry) and Prosodic Phonology (theories of representation), as well as from Optimality Theory (a theory of computation). An adequate theory of phonology, after all, needs both. Regardless of the phonological phenomena analyzed or the representational framework used, one repetitive and overarching theme emerging in every chapter throughout the book is that not only regular but also exceptional phonological forms demonstrate a systematic pattern, and can be captured by the same grammar as regular forms.
