Anchoring components are added to wearable robots to ensure a stable interaction between the suits and the human body and to minimize the displacement of the suits. However, these components can apply pressure to the body and can cause user dissatisfaction, which can decrease willingness to use the suits. Therefore, this study aims to develop a suit-type soft-wearable robot platform for walking assistance by providing comfortable garment pressure to ensure user satisfaction. The first prototype of a wearable robot suit was developed with anchoring components on the shoulders, waist, and thighs based on previous research results. Wear tests were conducted to measure garment pressure depending on posture using pressure sensors, and satisfaction surveys were conducted. The second prototype design was then developed, and performance tests with flexible artificial muscles and a satisfaction survey were conducted. Regarding the first prototype, the participants felt more than normal pressure in the shoulders and relatively less pressure in the thighs and calves. Thus, compared to the first design, the second design ensured a decreased garment pressure and resulted in an improvement of overall user satisfaction. These results can help provide guidance in the development of wearable robots by taking pressure comfort and user satisfaction into consideration.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been suggested as a sustainable alternative textile for apparel. Previous studies have evaluated the production of BC sheets and the suitability of these to form garment shapes. The laboratory measured physical performance characteristics of BC from an apparel perspective remain relatively unexplored. The aim of this study was to produce reproducible sheets of BC, enabling the evaluation of the performance of the BC in an apparel textile testing context, and comparison to other textile materials. Grown in sterile black tea with glucose, the BC presented as a mesh of non-woven nanofibers, and thus comparison was made with three non-woven fabrics. It has also been suggested that BC could be used as ‘vegetable’ leather; therefore, performance comparisons were conducted with animal skins. Utilizing British, European and International standard test methods, the selected fabrics were evaluated for their performance in tensile, elongation, moisture vapor permeability and abrasion tests, relevant for an apparel end-use. Tensile strength testing revealed that BC is weaker than its animal counterparts but does display similar physical characteristics at the point of failure; however, it displayed a higher tensile strength than the non-woven fabrics chosen for comparison. BC was the least breathable and most moisture-retentive of all the fabrics tested, raising questions regarding its suitability and comfort for apparel applications in its untreated state. However, BC displayed superior performance when tested for resistance to abrasion, suggesting it could be best utilized in the form of encapsulated patches in items subjected to this type of damage.

Nonwovens have wide application areas due to their advantageous properties like low cost, high production efficiency, and tuneable properties. They are mostly used for disposable products. Combining bicomponent fiber spinning with hydroentanglement method is one of the innovative methods to obtain nonwovens for durable applications. On the other hand, ultrasonic welding is an alternative assembling method for disposable products made of low weight nonwovens. In this study, the ultrasonic weldability of relatively heavier weight and thicker nonwoven fabrics made of polyester: polyamide bicomponent microfilaments were examined in order to combine the advantages of nonwovens and ultrasonic welding. Relatively higher thickness and weight, and also fiber composition of the nonwoven fabrics were compelling effects of the study that drove the motivation. Overall 60 samples were produced using five nonwoven fabrics with varying unit masses and 12 selected ultrasonic welding types. Seam strength and strain assessments were supported with stereomicroscope and visual inspections in evaluating the welds. Results showed that despite having thick seam lines up to 1.6 mm, successful welded seams could be obtained. Depending on the welding parameters, seam lines of some samples exhibited waviness, color changes, and deformations but these situations did not drastically affect the seam strength of samples.
