Introduction

Show more

“…Ph 3 PAuCl, dissolved in benzene or toluene, was treated with gaseous B 2 H 6 at 60 1C to form Au 55 (PPh 3 ) 12 Cl 6 in about 30% yield. 1,22 Several attempts to use NaBH 4 instead of diborane as reducing agent failed, and the reasons can satisfactorily be understood. One function of B 2 H 6 is to reduce Au(I) in the starting compound to Au(0), apart from the six Au atoms linked to chlorine atoms and so having the formal oxidation state +1.…”

“…The Au nanoparticles generated have quite narrow size distribution and remain stably dispersed for more than one year. Au nanoparticles smaller than 2.0 nm could be obtained by using triphenylphosphine 18 or thiol-derivatives such as a series of alkanethiols, 14 although the formation of their completely hexagonal network has been a difficult problem. Our self-organized Au nanoparticle monolayer covers the area of ∼0.1 µm 2 on the carbon-coated copper grid, presumably due to a π-π interaction of the TOBIP layer with an adjacent one.…”

“…51 At the same time, the same stable electron configuration are commonly observed, 31 as evident in 8-electron Au 11 (PPh 3 ) 8 Cl 3 . Recent convincing evidence shows that one of the first gold nanoclusters to be isolated and thoroughly studied 52 and originally thought to be Au 55 (PPh 3 ) 12 Cl 6 is instead a 58-electron [Au 69 (PPh 3 ) 20 Cl 12 ] À1 . 53 Nanoclusters are different from plasmonic gold nanocrystals in that-due to their relatively small number of metallic (i.e.…”
