Introduction: Improved aquatic animal health management is vital to aquaculture’s role in global food security

Abstract: Global food security and nutrition depend heavily on aquaculture, the continued growth of which is crucial as the world heads towards a human population of at least 9 billion by 2050, while harvests from wild capture will, at best, stabilise at current levels. Thus, a fundamental question is: how can we sustainably increase aquatic food production? It is clear that aquatic animal diseases present a substantial threat and, consequently, aquatic animal health management has a critical role in food security. An e… Show more

“…Climate change have significant impacts on freshwater and marine aquatic systems and hence on fisheries and aquaculture (Peeler & Ernst, 2019). Fisheries and aquaculture are highly vulnerable to changes in temperatures, flooding, droughts, rises in the water levels, among the most important ones.…”

“…Incentivization of reporting, integration of animal health services, standardization and integration of data are among the proposed solutions for improving data generation, flow and use of data from multiple sources. Incentivization of reporting can be achieved through prompt and appropriate feedback [ 29 ], clinical assistance or financial compensation to those who report as well as clear communication on how the data they provide can be analysed and used [ 40 , 41 ]. Integration of veterinary services at the dip sites may help to motivate more people to use the services while generating surveillance data through screening.…”

“…Proper aquatic animal health management must accompany aquaculture practices to sustain the industry (Chinabut, 2001;Opiyo et al, 2018;Peeler and Ernst, 2019). Health services in aquatic animals are relatively undeveloped as compared to health services in terrestrial animals (Peeler and Taylor, 2011;Scarfe and Palić, 2020).…”
