Introduction of a digital near-vision reading test for normal and low vision adults: development and validation

Abstract: Background MNREAD is an advanced near-vision acuity chart that has already been translated and validated in Greek language. Considering that no validated Greek digital near-vision test exists, our primary objective was to develop and validate a digital near-vision reading test based on the fundamental properties of the Greek printed MNREAD (MNREAD-GR). Methods This is a prospective, comparative study. A digital near-vision chart was developed (Democritus Digital Acuity Reading Test – DDART) with text size ca… Show more

“…In the last decade, a series of cross-sectional or prospective studies in refractive errors have been performed worldwide, such as in Asia [ 18 31 ], Europe [ 2 , 32 40 ], America [ 41 45 ], Oceania [ 46 49 ], and Africa [ 50 54 ]. These studies provided essential information on the epidemiology of major ocular disorders and visual impairment among various countries and ethnic groups.…”

“…8 On the other hand, the advanced reading tests like the RADNER, the MNREAD and the DDART reflect accurately the near vision, and their printed and digital versions have been used both in clinical and research settings. 6 , 12 , 16 , 21 , 22…”

“…wDDART introduces an automatic calculation of reading times using a digital signal processing algorithm to measure the duration of the talk and post-talk delays, formerly described by our group, 6 similarly to the approach of Radner et al 16 In detail, the patient’s voice is recorded by a standard microphone with sampling frequency f s , set in the operating system’s settings (default value 44.1 kHz). Thus, a digital, signed voltage signal x(n) is generated.…”

“… 22 After the UDVA evaluation, all near and, then, intermediate vision parameters were obtained for all patients using the Democritus Digital Acuity Reading Test (DDART), which is based on the Greek version of MNREAD. 23 Contrast sensitivity was evaluated with the Pelli–Robson test at 85 cd/m 2 background light.…”
