Introduction of robotic surgery for endometrial cancer is associated with lower bill sizes: The experience of a tertiary oncological centre in Singapore

Abstract: In this exploratory study, we aim to present the effects of a shift in the standard of care from open to robotic surgery in endometrial cancer in the single largest series in Singapore, on total hospital bill size. Methods: We retrospectively collected de-identified data from January 2008 to December 2017, consisting of all open and robotic surgeries performed for endometrial cancer in a tertiary oncology centre in Singapore. The data collected consisted of the number of open and robotic cases done per annum, … Show more

“…Dr. Ng emphasized that how robotic surgery is deployed to serve patients and deliver value is the most important consideration in setting up a robotic surgery program. He used the published experience of the Gynecologic Robot-Assisted Cancer and Endoscopic Surgery (GRACES) program at the National University Hospital [25] as a case study to highlight the key components of a sustainable robotic surgery program which are as follows: 1) identifying a need in the current way that surgical healthcare is delivered and accessed by patients; 2) matching that need to the capability that robotic surgical technology can deliver; and 3) ensuring access to as many patients as possible. This broad access produces two main outcomes: 1) operational efficiency and 2) lower costs.…”
