The tendency of late marriage and the increasing single population in Chinese society have galvanized a considerable amount of anxiety in recent years. Part of such anxiety has been manifested through the constant media representations of “shengnü” or “leftover women” since 2010. Referring to women in their late twenties or over thirties while still not getting married, the term “leftover women” indicates a continuous patriarchal policing of single women circulated in mass media. This study, by comparing two popular Chinese television series— We Get Married (2013) and Nothing but Thirty (2020), discusses the altering constructions of unmarried women on Chinese television against the backdrop of China's post-socialist gender politics. The comparison provides a useful vantage point to examine the emerging gendered structures and new cultural imperatives under specific historical contexts.

Instituto de Ensino Superior Presidente Tancredo de Almeida NevesRESUMO -O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar, por meio de categorias dos modelos mentais de evento, conforme van Dijk -no caso, participantes e ações -, como os grupos sociais envolvidos nos protestos, ocorridos em junho de 2013, no Brasil, são representados nas narrativas midiáticas e como essa representação contribui ou não para a credibilidade desses protestos e, consequentemente, para a construção da imagem dos grupos envolvidos no conflito. Para sua realização, filiamo-nos ao quadro teórico da Análise Crítica do Discurso (ACD), proposto por van Dijk, com o objetivo de compreender o funcionamento discursivo das narrativas midiáticas na construção da imagem desses grupos, nas seguintes revistas semanais de informação: Veja, Isto É, Época e Carta Capital. Nossas análises revelaram-nos como os posicionamentos ideológicos dos locutores das narrativas possibilitam a divisão desses grupos em NÓS e ELES, de acordo com óticas particulares sobre o evento em questão.Palavras-chave: manifestações, narrativas, discurso midiático.ABSTRACT -The present paper aims at analyzing the representation of social groups involved in the protests in June 2013, in Brazil, trough the study of categories of mental model of events, as van Dijk -in case, participants and his actions -in media narratives. Through this analysis, the study aims to understand how the representation of these groups contributes or not to the credibility of the protests and to build the image of the groups involved in the conflict. Within the theoretical framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (ACD), proposed by van Dijk, this article aims to investigate the discursive function of media narratives in the construction of image of these groups in the following magazines: Veja, Isto É, Época and Carta Capital. The analysis of these articles revealed how ideological positions of narrative's subjects enable the division of these groups in US and THEM, based on particular visions about the event.

The media's tendency to widely represent conflicts, through legitimization or de-legitimization, makes us believe that media narratives may not be perceived as 'neutral stances' for the public consumption. This study investigates the policy of a mainstream newspaper, The News International (NI), in Pakistan and discursive strategies manipulated by its editorial writers to portray the Arab Spring. It, specifically, examines how the selected newspaper editorials thematically constructed the uprising; (re) formulated the public opinion by echoing the Arab Spring-centred perspectives; and mostly backed the revolting protesters against the dictatorial rules in Tunisia, Yemen, Egypt, Libya and Syria. The data consist of purposefully selected editorials, which were published between January 2011 and December 2012. This particular timeframe has been distinguished for peak media coverage of the events. The qualitative data (editorial content) are analysed by using NVivo. Through discourse analysis approach, it is revealed that editorial writers employed several recurrent themes (e.g., protests, democracy, horror) to project a positive image of the protesters' movement and fully utilised their prerogative in constructing a 'pro-Arab Spring' discourse. This study concludes that such 'opinion discourses' serve as an eye-opener to the role of media in representing conflicts from different angles while staying in different societies. It also provides insights into the ways newspapers (dis) empower readers by promoting certain factions of a conflict and devaluing others.
