Introduction to chemical warfare agents, relevant simulants and modern neutralisation methods

Abstract: This short review presents the current main chemical warfare agents and their most relevant simulants, and the recent catalytic and selective methods for their soft neutralization, potentially usable in the future as an alternative to “heavy” methods for decontamination.

“…Remarkably, C-PAC750 (1:2) showed the highest N 2 adsorption amount, which can be attributed to the stepwise filling of micro-, meso-and macropores with N 2 at different relative pressure. Compared with CS750, a K 2 CO 3 /chitosan ratio of 1:2 resulted in a significant increase of the BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area and the total pore volume from 57 to 2850 m 2 •g −1 and from 0.09 to 1.48 cm 3 •g −1 , respectively. However, at higher K 2 CO 3 /chitosan ratios, the surface area decreased.…”

“…Nerve agents are one of the most toxic classes of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) [1,2]. In particular, organophosphorus molecules possessing P-X bonds (X = F, CN, and SR) inhibit acetylcholinesterase, the key enzyme involved in neuronal signaling [3]. Despite the international ban on their use, various nerve agents are still deployed in modern chemical warfare.…”

“…The major products from sarin hydrolysis are iso ‐propyl methylphosphonic acid and hydrogen fluoride (HF). In fact, the hydrolysis of the G‐ and V‐series in the presence of inorganic bases, small‐molecule organic bases, polymeric bases, or metal–organic frameworks into nontoxic products is currently an active area of research …”

“…Organophosphates (OPs) are organophosphorus compounds that contain the O=P(OR) 3 functional group and they have been widely used in the agricultural sector as pesticides [1,2]. Many of OPs can be toxic to human and animals, including insects and parasites, and the structure of OPs are also related to the chemical warfare agents (CWAs), such as sarin, VX, GA, and GB [3]. There has been a great interest in developing efficient technique of decontamination of harmful OPs from water, soil, and air.…”
