Introduction to Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy as a Measurement Method for the Wetting Degree of Lithium-Ion Cells

Abstract: In the production process chain of lithium-ion battery cells, the filling, consisting of dosing and wetting steps, of the cell and its components with electrolyte liquid is eminent for the final product quality and costs. To reduce the unnecessary wetting duration between filling and formation, and thereby the production costs, a measurement method for the wetting progress is necessary. In this paper, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) as a well-established technique is used for the first time to qua… Show more

“…The filling of cavities, as inner surfaces of the media, can be described as microscopic wetting, whereas the wetting of (macroscopic) surfaces can be regarded as superficial wetting. The former can be measured using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the latter can be visualized by neutron radiography (NR). Knoche et al visualized the filling process in operando for the first time by NR.…”

“…16 This generates a spatial tortuosity anisotropy and creates particularly long diffusion pathways d path through the electrode. 17 Among many other parameters, 18 the ionic resistance within LIB electrodes can be assessed in situ by measuring the cell impedance using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), 19 enabling a calculation of the tortuosity. 12 By measuring the impedance of cells at different states of charge (SOC) and temperatures, conclusions concerning the kinetics of lithium ions within the electrodes can be drawn.…”
