Intussusception in Infants and Children: A Review of 60 Cases

Abstract: Sixty pediatric patients with intussusception seen at Maternity and Children's Hospital over 2.5 years were retrospectively reviewed. There were 33 males and 27 females ranging in age from 1.5 months to 108 months with a mean of 11.5 months. Seventeen patients (28.3%) presented more than 48 hours after their symptoms started. Vomiting was the most common symptom (93.3%) followed by rectal bleeding (71.6%) and abdominal pain (48.3%). The clinical signs included the presence of blood per rectal examination in 58… Show more

“…23,24 Passage of so-called redcurrant jelly stool, a mixture of blood, mucoid exudate and stool, is characteristic of intussusception (sensitivity 50%, specificity 98.9%) and its presence on rectal examination was 78.6% sensitive and 100% specific for the diagnosis of intussusception. Al-Bassam & Orfale 21 reported that blood on the examining finger was found in only 58.3% of patients with intussusception. The radiological evidence of intussusception on barium enema was 100% sensitive and specific in our series and no further investigations were required.…”

“…Barium enema under fluoroscopy and hydrostatic reduction is the preferred method in infantile invagination. 3,20 In contrast, treatment modality in adult invaginations is surgery. [10][11][12] Because, there is an organic lesion which is mostly absorbing.…”

“…12 Al-Bassam and Orfale, in a series of 60 children, found that none had pure ileoileal intussusception. 13 We found four (8.3%) ileoileal cases among 48 cases of childhood intussusceptions. This relatively high percentage of ileoileal cases among our patients is probably not due to a higher frequency but to a lower incidence of intussusception.…”
