Invasive Candidiasis in Hospitalized Patients with Major Burns

Abstract: Background: Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a major cause of morbidities and mortality in patients hospitalized with major burns. This study investigated the incidence of IC in this specific population and analyzed the possible risk factors. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan. We identified 3582 patients hospitalized with major burns on over 20% of their total body surface area (TBSA) during 2000–2013; we further analyzed … Show more

“…Risk factors for invasive Candida infections relate to a wide variety of conditions (hematologic and solid organ malignancies, burns, major surgery) and treatment methods (stem cell and organ transplantation, use of immunosuppressive agents, antibiotics, chemotherapy, hemodialysis, intravenous nutrition) [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Prolonged hospital stay and admission to intensive care units are also recognized as major risk factors for invasive candidiasis [ 23 , 24 , 25 ].…”
